How to do the Dumbbell Palm Rotational Bent Over Row

The dumbbell palm rotational bent over row combines a supinating grip twist with a classic pulling pattern to recruit more of your lats, rhomboids, and biceps through a fuller range of motion. Step-by-step

  1. Hinge at the hips to about 45 degrees, soft bend in the knees, dumbbells hanging with palms facing back toward your shins.
  2. Initiate the pull by driving your elbow back and upward while simultaneously rotating your palm inward to face your torso at the top.
  3. Squeeze your lat and rhomboid hard at the top position for a brief pause before controlling the descent.
  4. Reverse the rotation on the way down, returning to the pronated start position in a slow, deliberate 2 to 3 second negative.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating the palm too early in the pull — keep the twist happening in the upper half of the movement where it maximally engages the lat.
  • Letting the lower back round under load — brace your core and maintain a neutral spine throughout every rep or reduce the weight.
  • Using momentum and shrugging the shoulder — keep your shoulder packed down and initiate every rep from the elbow drive, not a body swing.

Pro tipThink of your hand as a key turning in a lock only after your elbow passes your hip — this late rotation creates peak lat tension exactly when the muscle is in its strongest contractile position.
