How to do the Cable Incline Fly

ChestCableBeginner

The cable incline fly creates constant tension through the entire arc of movement, making it one of the most effective tools for building the upper chest that a flat press simply cannot replicate. Master the mechanics here and you lay the foundation for a fuller, more developed chest from every angle.

Step-by-step

  1. Set both pulleys to the lowest position, select a light working weight, and stand at the center of the cable station with one foot staggered forward for stability.
  2. Hold a handle in each hand with palms facing up, hinge slightly forward at the hips, and raise your arms in a wide arc up and inward toward a point above your upper chest.
  3. Maintain a soft, fixed bend in the elbows throughout the lift and squeeze the chest hard at the top where the handles nearly meet.
  4. Lower the cables slowly back to the start under full control, feeling a deep stretch across the upper pec before initiating the next rep.

Common mistakes

  • Straightening the arms completely during the movement, which shifts stress to the elbow joints instead of the chest. Keep a consistent soft bend in the elbows from start to finish.
  • Using too much weight and turning the fly into a press by bending the elbows excessively. Drop the load until you can move in a smooth, wide arc with the chest doing the work.
  • Rushing through the eccentric phase and letting the cables snap back. Slow the return down to at least two counts so the muscle stays loaded and grows more effectively.

Pro tipAt the top of each rep, think about driving your knuckles toward each other rather than just bringing your hands together. This subtle internal rotation cue maximizes upper pec fiber recruitment and turns a good fly into a great one.
